A handle at the neck, for the two seconds when your dog needs to be right beside you.

Two layers of nylon, an inch and a half wide, with a metal buckle and a metal D-ring. The short handle above the buckle is the reason to pick this over a flat collar — you take hold of it at a trailhead, at the vet's door, when another dog comes around a corner, and your dog is under control without a fistful of fur. A velcro panel on the outside holds an ID patch. The lining is padded, which matters on a collar this wide.

Be clear about what the handle is. It is for close control at arm's length. The supplier publishes no load rating for it, so we won't either — don't use it to lift a dog over a fence or out of the water. That is a harness job. And 1.5 inches is a lot of collar: size M starts at a 15-inch neck, so this is built for medium and large dogs and it will swamp a small one.

Measure around the base of the neck where the collar actually sits, with two fingers under the tape, and part the fur on a thick coat — measuring over a double coat is what puts people a size up. Between two sizes, take the larger. The Slackline Bungee Lead is the same webbing from the same supplier, in Blackout, if you want them to match. Our size calculator sizes the Ridgeline harness rather than this collar, but it asks for the same neck measurement and it will flag a build that sizes oddly.

Covered for one year

Covers defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover chewing, digging, or ordinary wear. Dogs are hard on gear, and we would rather say so up front than argue about it later.
